This single-storey architect-designed timber cabin sits on the waterfront within Killykeen Forest Park in County Cavan, overlooking the still waters of Lough Oughter. Well suited to couples or a small family, the woodland setting and waterside position offer a peaceful, nature-focused break within a landscape designated for its ecological importance. Birdsong and the rustle of leaves set the tone, with over 47 bird species recorded in the surrounding forest and red squirrels, otters, and pine martens among the wildlife to spot. The park's network of trails weaves through mature woodland, offering walks and cycling, while the lake provides fishing, boating, and paddle boarding from a jetty on site. The historic Clogh Oughter Castle can be reached by boat across the water, and the ruins of Drumlane Monastery stand overlooking Lough Derrybrick. A scenic 30-mile cycling loop passes through Belturbet, Miltown, and Killeshandra, tracing the winding roads through Ireland's lake district.
A ramp leads to the front door, providing level access into the cabin's open-plan kitchen and dining area. This central space is filled with art, carefully chosen furniture, and textiles that give the cabin a sense of individuality quite unlike a standard holiday let. Books and games line the shelves, and the overall feel is personal and considered. A separate living room opens off the dining area, with a Smart TV, comfortable seating, and views out toward the surrounding woodland. The main bedroom has a super-king-size bed and is thoughtfully furnished, with a restful quality that carries through to the second bedroom, which contains a single bed. The shower room has a shower and WC. All rooms sit on a single level with no internal steps, and the layout flows naturally between each space. From the living area, a door leads out to a private balcony with views across the water.
The cabin has a private garden set among the trees, with a terrace and BBQ for al fresco dining. Level access from outside is provided by a ramp to the front door. Across the wider development, shared facilities are available to all guests, including hot tubs, a sauna, a Japanese bath, spa treatments, and a forest bathing area. Bicycle hire, boat hire, paddle boarding, and kayak excursions can also be arranged on site. The covered outdoor seating area, licensed bar, and shop are shared with other guests. On-site parking is available.
