This grown-up getaway gives access to high-end extras including an indoor swimming pool, steam room and restaurant. Pet friendly, it’s a fine choice for a couple who plan to explore Shrewsbury and the surrounding countryside then kick-back in style.

Park and unpack at leisurely pace; the lodge features an open-plan social space area that combines cooking, dining and living spaces and, courtesy of its French doors, flows seamlessly onto the outdoor deck. A flame-effect electric fire adds ambience after-dark; curl up on the sofa to watch TV after enjoying dinner for two prepared in the nearby kitchen. When it's time to rest, two king-size bedrooms are available. The master bedroom has its own en-suite shower room, while the main bathroom adds extra convenience. Fully enclosed, the outdoor deck makes a fine addition to your living space and is furnished for al fresco dining.

Sitting amid an adults-only park just 2 miles from Shrewsbury, this peaceful retreat strikes the perfect balance between busy and laid-back. On-site facilities such as a heated pool and steam room will help recharge your batteries, while coarse fishing pools and a dog exercise area provide fresh-air options and the restaurant offers a break from self-catering – check the menu of facilities and prices and start planning how best to spend your spare time. Away from the lodge, Shrewsbury's medieval town centre offers excellent shopping and scenic cruises along the River Severn, while the Ironbridge Gorge Museum (18 miles) showcases the region’s industrial heritage and Attingham Park (9.5 miles) is a National Trust mansion surrounded by parkland and deer. For scenic walks, the Shropshire Way passes straight through the lodge park.

We genuinely felt we were staying in a prison camp. I'm sure there are good reasons for rules, but as adults our experience at this establishment was stultifying. We left early.
