Set on a working farm in beautiful rural Cumbria, this dog-friendly shepherd’s hut is a wonderful holiday spot for couples, solo travellers or a small family group. With direct access to Smardale Gill Nature Reserve from the doorstep, you can take scenic walks along the old railway track to Smardale Gill Viaduct (1.5 miles), keeping an eye out for red squirrels and rare butterflies along the way. Keen walkers can also plan routes along the Coast to Coast route (0.5 miles).

Four timber steps lead up to the raised deck, where it’s worth turning around to take note of the far-reaching views before stepping inside. The cosy timber-clad interior has been thoughtfully designed with natural materials, full insulation and underfloor heating to keep things warm and welcoming throughout the year. In the open-plan living space, you’ll have a plush sofa that converts into a sofa bed for one or two children, a Smart TV and a compact kitchen with a dining area for two. Lastly, there’s a comfortable double bed. Completing the accommodation is an en-suite shower room with a flushing WC. Outside, sip your morning coffee on the raised deck and head to the gravelled area below for al fresco dining on the picnic table. There’s also an enclosed lawn where dogs can stretch their legs. Private parking is available for one car beside the hut.

You won’t be far from the bustling market town of Kirkby Stephen (2.5 miles), which has an inviting mix of independent shops, galleries, cafés, pubs and restaurants. When it’s time to explore further afield, visit the Great Ashby Scar (10 miles) for striking limestone pavements and rare plant life, or challenge yourself with a hike up Great Shunner Fell (18 miles), the third-highest summit in the Yorkshire Dales.
