Take in incredible views over the fells and Bassenthwaite Lake from this compact shepherd’s hut in the Lake District. It’s perfect for a couple or solo adventurer with canine companions who love walking, wildlife and scenery that stops you in your tracks. The hut is located on a farm in the foothills of Skiddaw mountain, with an enclosed gravelled garden for spending time in between trips out. As the sun sets on a blissful day, light up the fire pit, listen to the sounds of nature and watch the stars come out.
A short five-step climb leads you to the front door and into a cosy studio-style hideaway. Timber panelling and soft tones reflect the hut’s natural surroundings, and on warm days you can open the top half of the stable door to let the fresh Lakeland breeze drift in. After walks straight from your doorstep, freshen up in the shower room before rustling up a hearty meal to enjoy at the bar-style table by the window, taking in the views as you tuck in. Then get cosy under the covers of the double bed to watch TV before drifting off for a peaceful night’s sleep.
Step out on walking trails at Dodd Wood, 2.5 miles from the hut. If you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of an elusive red squirrel. Bassenthwaite Lake (3 miles) is home to the Lake District Wildlife Park, where you can meet Lar gibbons, bush dogs and meerkats. Another of the region’s famous lakes, Derwentwater, is 6 miles away. Here you can take a scenic boat trip or walk the 10-mile loop around the shore. For shopping, food and culture, head to the pretty market town of Keswick (6.5 miles), where The Puzzling Place and Derwent Pencil Museum are among the highlights.
