Get away from it all at this smart lodge sitting in the grounds of a country hall estate in Calthwaite, on the edge of the North Pennines National Landscape. Sitting just 7.5 miles north of Penrith, it sleeps four people across two bedrooms, and is ideal for families or groups of friends who are searching for a peaceful base to call home while they explore the Lake District, the Eden Valley and the Pennine Fells together. Set off for Pooley Bridge (13.5 miles) to take a traditional steamer across Ullswater, or head to Aira Force (16 miles) to witness the majestic falls. Closer to home, the walled garden and topiary terraces at Hutton-in-the-Forest (4 miles) are a delight to explore. In the evening, come home to sink into your private hot tub under a starry Cumbrian sky.
Pull into your private parking spot (there's room for two cars) and step inside your lovely single-level lodge. You'll find an open-plan living space built for unwinding after a day on the fells, with a corner sofa and an armchair drawn up around a flame-effect electric fire and a Smart TV. The kitchen area handles proper self-catering, and the dining area works equally well for shared meals and map-planning. Step out onto the decking and you’ll find seating and a private hot tub looking out over the estate. There's also a BBQ stand if you want to bring your own BBQ with you. A king-size bedroom with an en-suite shower room and a handy twin bedroom served by a family shower room complete the layout.
Explore the romantic ruins at Lowther Castle (13.5 miles), or set off to hike along the longest surviving stretch of Hadrian's Wall at Birdoswald Roman Fort (23 miles). Back on the estate you're welcome to stroll the hall gardens, and stop off for a drink in the shared bar and restaurant (open Wednesday to Sunday). Paddock space for your horses can be arranged on request (charges apply).
